Weekend on LBI

April 21st, 2010 by lizzieb

I grew up going to LBI (Long Beach Island) – Ship Bottom, in particular. Growing up near the Jersey shore, we’d take many day-trips down the shore or stay for a week or long weekend. We know many people over the years with places at the shore and that would give us even more reason to visit. My uncle’s family had a home in Ship Bottom, LBI and that’s where I spent my first few years going to the shore.

The beaches of LBI are different than the other shore towns from what I remember. The sand from the road to the ocean was very shore – especially compared to Wildwood,  which must have the largest beach I’ve ever seen. It felt like you’d walk a mile before you hit the ocean. But, LBI is short and the ocean was always rougher than other beaches and it was deeper too.

This is not the happiest of occasions that brings me back to LBI. We’re heading down the shore for a memorial service for my brother’s best friend.

  • LBI has a dedicated following of people from generation to generation. If you were brought there as a kid and have fond memories you will probably want to go back as an adult. The beaches are nice, but quite narrow in many places. The island is heavily developed from top to bottom, except for the Holgate preserve at the Southern end, which is off limits all summer long due to Piping Plover nesting. Green/sand flies can be a problem, depending where you are on the island and wind patterns.

  • I had my LBI vacation a few weeks ago and I am still missing my favorite place in the world. I went there every summer when I was little with my grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. I watched Princess Di marry Prince Charles while on LBI. I have so many memories of being down the shore with my family and I have continued it with my only daughter. She loves the water and goes in no matter what the temp. If it rains, I take her to the indoor pool at St. Frances Community Center. They also have an outside pool. I particularly love the south end of the island, which is Holgate and Beach Haven Inlet.
