Chicago Recession Vacation

August 24th, 2009 by baldydog

Our Chicago Recession Vacation is over, we are safely back home and ready to begin the weekly routine. What made this a good example of a Recession Vacation? It wasn’t necessarily a great example of a Chicago Recession Vacation, as we only spent 1 night in the city of Chicago, but were in the Chicago area for the majority of the time.

Below are a few things we did that made it a good Recession Vacation with a Chicago flair.

  • Had a few great meals in Chicago, but ate at home quite a bit…our hosts were great cooks..had some amazing ribs..only had Chicago Pizza once and it was the great brick oven pizza of Trattoria D.O.C. ,not a Chicago Deep Dish that I had wanted..but oh so delicious anyway.
  • Took the L(elevated train) into Chicago(pretty inexpensive transportation) and walked around Chicago for a good day(free except for meals).
  • Checked out the Chicago Public Library in downtown Chicago..sweet library for sure..and it was Free.
  • Staid with friends while in the  Chicago area..free lodging, got to love that.
  • Took lots of Pictures with my Canon S5 IS, which has been paid for and then some..so relatively free. Be sure to check out my Chicago Recession Vacation Pictures on Flickr.
  • Went to the Chicago Bears Training Camp on the last day of their camp. Again it was Free.
  • Hung out with our Chicago friends ..cost..free..priceless.
  • Canoe ride on the Iroquois River…free..
  • Boat ride on the Iroquois River…free…
  • Checked out the Indiana Wind Farms..price of gas, but free for the most part.
  • Bought a John Deere hat at an antiques store…$4..oh the entire store is for sale..you can buy the store with all the antiques, the building, and two cars for around 130,000. Quite a deal.
  • Lizzie bought me a red ugly $125 Ralph Loreen floral shirt for $15 and several other Hawaiian shirts for under ten.  What a great Recession Vacation outfit it is indeed.
  • Checked out a huge dairy in Indiana and bought some 5 year old Cheddar and Cheddar Curds..also had the most amazing mint chocolate chip ice cream at the Fair Oaks Farm in Fair Oaks, Indiana. They have a tour of the farm, but it wasn’t free, so we declined, but did enjoy the cheese and ice cream.
  • Lizzie checked out an old School building that was for sale in Indiana. A 20 room school with a gym, cafeteria for $50,000..lots of deals are available during a recession for sure.

Well that is the quick wrap of our Chicago Recession Vacation. If you intend to visit the Chicago area, be certain that a huge budget is not required to have a good time.

What low budget vacations have you had recently?
